Maintenance, formerly called alimony, is often one of the most contentious issues in a divorce. Maintenance is a payment or stream of payments one spouse makes to the other for support after the divorce is finalized. Courts initially consider a number of statutory factors in determining if maintenance is appropriate in a given case. If maintenance is appropriate, and the combined gross income of the parties is $500,000 or less, the court will employ statutory formulas to determine the amount of maintenance to be paid and the duration of the payments. The Wirtz Law Firm is skilled at interpreting and applying these formulas and representing clients in any disputes related to the maintenance statute.
